Discover how a full Shopify migration helped Fat Buddha connect online and in-store operations while preserving the brand experience customers know and love.
Fat Buddha has built a loyal following as one of the UK’s best-known independent urban retailers, supplying premium streetwear, footwear, spray paint, and lifestyle products from leading global brands. Since launching in Glasgow, the business has established itself as a destination for fashion, creativity, and culture, serving customers both online and in-store.
A Visualsoft client since 2011, Fat Buddha has grown significantly over the past 15 years. As the business evolved, the need for a more connected and scalable retail ecosystem became increasingly important. In March 2026, Fat Buddha moved to Shopify and Shopify POS with a clear goal: unify operations across eCommerce and physical retail while creating a stronger, more streamlined customer experience.
The migration was about more than simply changing platforms. Fat Buddha needed a solution that could support the brand operationally, visually, and commercially, both online and in-store.
One of the biggest priorities was unification. Their previous setup relied on separate systems for eCommerce and POS, creating friction between online and physical retail operations. The aim was to bring everything together under one ecosystem, giving the team greater visibility, consistency, and flexibility across the business.
At the same time, design played a critical role. Fat Buddha’s identity is rooted in culture and visual expression, so the new Shopify experience needed to reflect that personality while delivering a modern, intuitive user journey.
The complexity of the product catalogue also presented a major challenge. With tens of thousands of product variants across multiple categories, ensuring accurate data mapping and migration was essential to maintaining operational continuity and SEO performance.
To ensure the migration was successful, we delivered a full end-to-end Shopify implementation covering design, data migration and SEO.
The project began with a comprehensive design discovery process focused on understanding Fat Buddha’s audience, brand identity and customer journey expectations. This allowed our team to create a Shopify experience that balanced strong visual impact with a seamless shopping experience.
Behind the scenes, the migration required careful handling of an extensive product catalogue with tens of thousands of variants. Using Visualsoft’s bespoke Shopify migration tooling, we ensured accurate data mapping and transfer, while implementing the necessary SEO work to preserve visibility and minimise disruption following launch.
Shopify POS formed another key part of the transition. Our team managed the full migration away from the previous till system, successfully installing and configuring Shopify POS within Fat Buddha’s Glasgow store.
Staff training and onboarding were completed ahead of launch, allowing the store to operate fully on Shopify POS from day one. The implementation also introduced the Zonal app into the wider Shopify ecosystem, helping support operational flexibility and future scalability.
Although still early in the migration journey, Fat Buddha now operates from a fully unified Shopify ecosystem across eCommerce and physical retail.
The business benefits from:
Most importantly, the migration has created a platform built for future growth. With Shopify and Shopify POS now operating together, Fat Buddha is positioned to scale more efficiently while continuing to deliver the premium retail experience customers expect from the brand.
