A brief history of AI
Artificial Intelligence has become a significant part of everyday life since the advances in generative AI technologies in late 2022. This progress was driven by developments in transformer-based deep neural networks and large language models (LLMs). OpenAI's release of ChatGPT, powered by GPT-3 at the time, marked a turning point by giving the general public direct access to a powerful, text-based generative AI.
For many, this was their first real interaction with AI, and the platform's ability to mimic natural conversation, generate creative content, assist with coding, and even perform some analytical tasks quickly captured global interest. At the same time, it prompted widespread discussion about AI's potential impact on employment, education and creativity.
In March 2023, OpenAI launched GPT-4, marking another leap forward in AI capability. Other major players soon followed: Google with Gemini, Anthropic with Claude, xAI with Grok, and others such as Deepseek, all entering the space with their own generative AI models and tools.
The growth of AI image generation
Another area that has surged in popularity is AI image generation. Tools like Midjourney, DALL·E, Canva and DeepAI allow users to create images from text prompts. However, these tools are not without limitations. Generated images often contain inaccuracies, famously, early models regularly produced images with an incorrect number of fingers.
AI-generated images have also been used to produce convincing deepfakes, some of which have been mistaken for genuine news content. This has brought the implications of AI-generated media into sharper public focus.
Understanding AI's limitations
Outbound engagement (actively participating in conversations) became a tactic to extend reach and visibility. A known issue with generative AI is 'hallucination', where the system fabricates information that sounds plausible but is entirely incorrect. While the output may appear confident, it still requires human judgement to verify accuracy and context.
AI in Today's Landscape
Does AI have a place in our lives?
Despite controversies such as AI-generated art using creators' work without consent and fears about job displacement, there is no denying that AI has an established place in modern life.
Julie Zhuo offers a compelling analogy:
‘AI is basically your new insanely productive, cheap yet junior talent that must be aggressively micromanaged, and it can do the work of half the team. This only works if the other half – the human half – is made of classically trained experts (and maybe a few generalists) with the intuition and taste to guide these productive-yet-ignorant underlings toward good work.’
This perspective captures the essence of AI's role. It is not a replacement for human creativity, insight or expertise, but a tool to amplify them. Used thoughtfully, AI can improve productivity and efficiency, but it still requires oversight and input from knowledgeable people.
Choosing the right tools
With a growing number of AI tools available, selecting the right one can be challenging. It will often come down to testing, trialling and assessing what best suits your particular needs.
While some platforms may be more highly rated than others, effectiveness is often context-dependent. What works well for one team or project may not be the best fit for another.
One essential consideration when using AI tools is data security. Generative AI models may retain the information entered into them. Feeding confidential or sensitive information into these systems carries a risk of unintended exposure or misuse. For anything business-critical or proprietary, human handling is still the safest approach.
How Visualsoft is using AI
Embracing AI to enhance workflows
At Visualsoft, we view AI as a tool to be embraced and used strategically. It enables rapid research, information collation, and provides quick overviews that support decision-making and content creation.
However, every AI-generated result is reviewed and verified. The human touch remains central to everything we produce. All staff have completed introductory training in AI and are encouraged to explore practical applications that enhance their work and improve efficiency.
Supporting staff and maintaining quality
AI makes it easier to gather information on unfamiliar subjects, helping staff to produce accurate and insightful content quickly. While it can never replace deep expertise, it provides valuable support in the research and ideation stages.
It is important to note that Google does not penalise the use of AI-generated content in blogs or websites. However, it does reward originality and depth. AI can be a helpful assistant for checking tone, grammar and spelling, but the final content must offer genuine value and uniqueness.
All staff at Visualsoft are encouraged to develop skills in emerging technologies, including AI. By building understanding and confidence in its use, we aim to stay ahead of the curve and continue to deliver high-quality, tailored services that meet our clients' needs.
