Search is changing fast. Customers are no longer just typing keywords into Google, they’re asking questions directly to AI tools, voice assistants and generative search experiences. For eCommerce brands, this shift means visibility is no longer just about ranking links, but about being the answer.

This is where Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) comes in. While SEO remains essential, AEO focuses on optimising your content so it can be selected, summarised and surfaced by AI-powered answer engines. For established eCommerce brands, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity: adapt your content now, or risk losing visibility at the top of the funnel.

In this blog, we’ll explain what AEO is, how it differs from traditional SEO, and what it means in practice for eCommerce businesses with mature platforms, large catalogues and competitive markets.

What is AEO?

AEO is the process of structuring and optimising content so it can be used as a direct answer by AI-driven search platforms. Instead of focusing solely on rankings in traditional search results, AEO is about ensuring your brand’s content is clear, authoritative and easy for AI systems to interpret and reuse.

These answer engines include:

  • AI search experiences with Google

  • AI assistants like ChatGPT

  • Voice search tools such as Alexa and Google Assistant

For eCommerce brands, AEO means creating content that directly answers questions customers are already asking such as:

  • “What’s the best (product type) for (specific use)?”

  • ”Which brand offers the most sustainable option?”

  • “What should I look for when buying (product) online?”

If your content answers these questions clearly and accurately, AI platforms are more likely to surface your brand as part of the response, often before users even reach a traditional search results page.

How AEO differs from traditional SEO

AEO builds on SEO fundamentals, but the focus is different. Traditional SEO is primarily about ranking pages for keywords, optimising metadata, internal links and backlinks, and driving clicks from search engine results pages.

AEO on the other hand is about answering questions clearly and concisely, structuring content so AI can extract key information, and prioritising intent over keywords. Instead of asking “What keyword should this page rank for?” AEO asks: what question is the customer trying to answer and can an AI summarise this page in one clear response?

For eCommerce brands, this often means shifting from long, keyword-stuffed descriptions to more structured content that includes FAQs, comparison points, clear benefits and concise explanations.

Why AEO matters for eCommerce brands

For established eCommerce businesses, AEO isn’t a nice to have, it’s becoming a competitive advantage.

Many AI-driven search experiences deliver answers without requiring users to click through to a website. If your brand is cited or referenced in those answers, you gain visibility at the earliest stage of the customer journey, even when traffic doesn’t immediately follow.

Customers using AI tools often have more specific, purchase-driven questions. Being featured as an answer positions your brand as a trusted recommendation, not just another search result.

As generative search becomes more prominent, relying solely on traditional ranking carries risks. Brands that optimise content for both SEO and AEO are better positioned to maintain organic visibility as search behaviour changes.

Key AEO strategies

AEO doesn’t require reinventing your entire SEO strategy, but it does require refining how your content is structured and presented.

AI tools favour content that directly answers specific questions. For brands, this means building content around real customer queries, not just keywords. Buying guides, category content and FAQs should clearly address questions like “Which product is best for…?” or “What’s the difference between…?”

Clear formatting is critical, so use short, descriptive headings, bullet points for features and benefits; FAQ section on category and product pages. In turn this helps AI systems extract key information quickly and accurately.

Product pages shouldn’t persuade, they should inform. Strong AEO-friendly product pages explain who the product is for, what it solves, how it compares to alternatives, and key specifications and use cases. The clearer the answers, the more likely AI tools are to surface your content.

Use structured data where possible, such as FAQs, by doing so it gives AI systems and search engines explicit context about your content. While not a guarantee, structured data improves clarity and reduces ambiguity when AI engines are selecting answers.

How to measure AEO performance

Measuring AEO success isn’t as straightforward as tracking keyword rankings, but there are still meaningful indicators.

Some AI platforms now send referral traffic, so by monitoring these sources in analytics can help identify which content is being surfaced and reused. Also manually testing key customer questions in AI tools can reveal whether your brand is being referenced. Over time, this gives insight into visibility at the answer level.

Pages optimised for AEO, such as buying guides, should show how strong engagement metrics are. High time on page and low bounce rates often signal that content is effectively answering user intent. It’s important to view AEO as complementary to SEO. Improvements in clarity, structure and intent-driven content often support stronger organic performance overall.

Common challenges

Established eCommerce sites often struggle with repetitive product descriptions. This can dilute clarity for AI systems. Introducing unique, informative elements, such as FAQs or use-case guidance, helps differentiate pages.

AEO requires concise answers, but eCommerce products can be complex. The solution is layered content: short, clear summaries supported by expandable detail for users who want more information.

AEO sits across SEO, content, UX, and development. Without clear ownership, its’ easy to overlook. Successful brands treat AEO as a cross-functional effort rather than a standalone tactic.

Practical next steps

To get started with AEO:

  • Audit key pages for unanswered customer questions
  • Add structured FAQs to high-intent category and product pages
  • Rewrite content with intent in mind, not just keywords
  • Implement structured data where relevant
  • Test real queries in AI tools and refine content accordingly

Small changes across high-impact pages can deliver outsized gains as AI-driven search continues to grow.
