How retailers can optimise for trust, not just traffic

For years, retail growth has been driven by a simple equation: more traffic equals more sales. But in today’s AI-shaped retail landscape, that equation is breaking down.

Retailers are discovering a hard truth: visibility alone no longer guarantees growth. Algorithms might decide what gets shown, but trust decides what gets bought.

As AI-powered search, social platforms, and recommendation engines reshape how customers discover brands, retailers need to rethink what optimisation really means. It’s no longer just about ranking higher or driving clicks. It’s about earning belief.

The discovery shift retailers can’t ignore

Retail discovery used to begin with a search engine and end on a brand’s website. Today, it’s fragmented across AI search tools, creator content, social feeds and peer recommendations.

Consumers are increasingly using tools like ChatGPT, TikTok search and AI-generated summaries to guide decisions. At the same time, traditional traffic is declining. Nearly 60% of Google searches now end without a click, with answers served directly on the results page.

Crucially, most of the content AI surfaces doesn’t come from brand websites. It comes from:

  • Customer reviews

  • Creator and influencer content

  • Forums and community discussions

  • Comparison and affiliate sites

If customers aren’t talking about your brand, AI won’t either. That’s the risk. And it’s why some retailers are seeing sharp declines in organic visibility, even with strong SEO fundamentals.

The opportunity, however, lies in a shift of mindset: optimising for trust rather than traffic.

Trust is the new performance metric

Modern consumers are highly attuned to marketing tactics. They scroll past ads, question polished claims and seek reassurance from people they relate to.

The data is consistent and clear:

  • People trust recommendations from friends and family far more than advertising

  • User-generated content is trusted significantly more than brand created messaging

  • Authentic peer voices outperform even the most sophisticated targeting strategies

This is only amplified by the rise of AI-generated content. As automated copy becomes more common, shoppers are increasingly sceptical of content that doesn’t feel human. What emerges is a new trust hierarchy:

Recommendations from people you know

Content from relatable customers, creators and peers

Brand or AI-generated content

Retailers that continue to optimise purely for impressions, clicks or keyword rankings risk falling behind. The brands that win embed trust signals throughout the customer journey.

Making trust visible and shoppable

Optimising for trust means ensuring advocacy doesn’t sit in silos. It needs to be visible wherever customers make decisions.

On-site, this means surfacing real customer voices at key moments: product page reviews, customer photos, testimonials, and social proof near calls to action. These signals reduce friction and provide reassurance when it matters most.

Beyond the website, advocacy should flow into email, social media, paid media, and even AI discovery. Featuring customer stories in campaigns, resharing UGC and enabling shoppable creator content shortens the distance between recommendation and purchase.

Technology plays a critical role here. Modern commerce platforms make it easier to track referrals, integrate UGC and attribute revenue to advocacy-driven activity. When trust is measurable, it becomes investable.

From traffic chasing to trust building

The retailers set to outperform over the next few years won’t be those chasing every new algorithm update or pouring ever-increasing budgets into paid acquisition. They’ll be the ones who build systems around trust.

That means asking different questions:

  • How are we enabling customers to recommend us effortlessly?

  • Where do real customer voices appear in our journey?

  • Are we rewarding the people who drive belief in our brand?

In an AI-driven marketplace, growth doesn’t belong to the loudest brands. It's among the most trusted ones.
