Last week, some of our engineering team headed to London for PHPUK 2026. With two of us splitting up to maximise coverage across different tracks, we were able to dive into everything from the future of AI to the essentials of digital security.
We left the conference not just with new technical knowledge, but with a clear roadmap for how we can improve our products and give back to the developer community. Here is a look at our highlights and how they will shape our work moving forward.
Building for the long term
One of the biggest themes of the conference was discipline over novelty. In a world of fast-moving trends, the keynote reminded us that the best engineering decisions are grounded in the specific needs of the business, or, as the recurring mantra went, "It depends".
-
Simplicity wins: We are focusing on keeping our systems simple and easy to manage, rather than adopting complex new technologies just because they are popular.
-
Measuring success: We are moving from assumptions to "measurable observability". By using new benchmarking tools, we can ensure our apps stay fast and stable even as our user base grows.
-
Reliability by design: We’re adopting a "built-to-last" approach to our code. By making our software more structured and intentional, we reduce the risk of accidental "bugs" when we make updates in the future.

Navigating the AI frontier
AI was a major topic, with sessions moving "beyond the hype" to look at how it can be a responsible partner in engineering.
-
Smart ownership: We learned about the risks of "cognitive debt", where AI generates work that humans don't fully understand.
-
New standards: To prevent this, we are drafting new guidelines to ensure every piece of work, whether assisted by AI or not, is fully understood, documented, and safe for our customers.
A focus on security and trust
Security is at the heart of what we do, especially for our Shopify applications.
-
Proactive protection: We are aligning our development with the latest global industry standards for API security.
-
Verification over trust: We are stepping up our auditing of the external tools and packages we use. In modern software, we don't just assume something is safe; we verify it.

Investing in the community
Perhaps the most inspiring takeaway was the importance of the wider tech community.
-
Giving back: We are exploring ways to share some of our internal innovations with the wider world as "Open Source" projects, which helps build our brand and attract top talent.
-
Local impact: We are looking into reviving local tech meetups to share what we’ve learned and help foster the next generation of digital talent in our region.
“Sustainable software quality is achieved through proactive discipline rather than just changing tools."
What’s next?
We have already identified several high-priority actions, from strengthening our security protocols to prototyping new features for our merchants.
PHPUK 2026 reinforced that while our core technologies are mature, the way we use them is more vibrant and forward-thinking than ever. We’re excited to bring that energy back to everything we build.
