Shopify's big checkout upgrade: What you need to know before 2026

If you’re an existing Shopify merchant, there’s a big change coming that your business needs to be aware of. Shopify is rolling out a major upgrade to its Thank You and Order Status pages, making them more secure and customisable for your online store. The deadline to make the switch? 26th August 2026

While that might seem far away, getting ahead of the game will save you a lot of stress down the line and set you up to continue providing the best possible experience for your customers.

What’s new? The key changes you need to know

Shopify is replacing the current Thank You and Order Status pages with new versions that support app blocks and custom pixels. This makes customisation easier and safer. But there’s a catch - if your store currently uses additional scripts or apps to customise these pages, you’ll need to migrate them before the deadline.

For standard Shopify merchants, Shopify will automatically upgrade your pages after the deadline, but any customisations that haven’t been migrated will be lost. If you’re a Shopify Plus merchant, the process is a little different, and you should refer to the Shopify Plus customisation guide.

Why this matters for your eCommerce business

These changes aim to create a more unified, secure, and adaptable platform. The new pages are designed to be more efficient and user-friendly, ultimately benefiting you and your customers.

Here’s why it’s important for your online store:

  • Better security: Shopify is tightening security measures to protect your customer data.
  • Easier Customisations: The new app blocks and custom pixels offer a safer, more structured way to customise your pages.
  • Building for the future: Shopify is moving towards a streamlined checkout process, and this upgrade ensures your store stays up to date.

By planning ahead, you can ensure a smooth transition and avoid any disruptions to your checkout experience.

Getting your online store ready for Shopify’s big upgrade

If you’re a standard Shopify merchant:

  • Migrate your customisations: Any custom code or design elements on your current Thank You and Order Status pages will need to be manually moved to the new system.
  • Upgrade to the new pages: Follow Shopify’s guide to implement the new pages and ensure everything is working as expected.

If you’re a Shopify Plus merchant:

  • Review your customisations: Head over to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin to access your personalised upgrade guide. This will show you what changes need to be made.
  • Migrate your customisations: If you’re using checkout.liquid for customisations, you’ll need to transition to Shopify’s new checkout extensibility framework. This means reworking scripts, apps, and theme code to fit the new structure.
  • Test everything thoroughly: With more complex setups, thorough testing in a staging environment is crucial. Make sure discounts, shipping calculations, and third-party integrations work seamlessly.
  • Coordinate with Shopify: Working with your Shopify Plus account manager can help make the process smoother and avoid potential roadblocks.
