Google recently announced that as of 15th September 2015, certain changes will be made to their feed specification and product taxonomy, and although Google are scheduled to send out updates, the team here at Visualsoft have put together a brief summary of the changes and how it could affect you and your website.
The changes to the taxonomy include alterations to some categories and subcategories. The aim of doing this is simple – to provide a richer, more simplified way for you to enter the information into your feed. An example of one of these changes is that you will no longer need to provide certain subcategories such as coats and jackets or shirts and tops.
Many of the changes are targeted Other changes coming into play on September 15th 2015, which may affect UK feeds, relate to the information which needs to be included for each product when entered into the feed, including:
– For Australia, Brazil, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US a valid GTIN and brand value will need to be added for the brands mentioned in the following link: https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6239390
Valid and unique product ID’s will need to be included in the feed. Any invalid ID’s will lead to that specific product being disapproved.
It’s recommended that a product feed is created to it’s highest quality, and is compliant with all the feed specifications. By doing this, and getting it right the first time, you are reducing the chances of your products being disapproved which could result in a dip in the performance of your shopping campaigns, and prove to be a waste of time and money!
We’re fortunate to have a strong working relationship with our friends at Google, and we’ve been advised that no changes need to be made to any current feeds – all feeds will continue to run as they are with no interruptions. Although you may notice in the future when updating their product feed that some categories have changed name or may no longer be available.
