Internet shopping to increase by 18% in 2011

Internet shopping will continue to grow strongly in Britain in 2011, according to the leading industry body IMRG. This news comes despite concerns over the future economic outlook and recent VAT rise, suggesting that consumers are still willing to spend online.

Capgemini and IMRG reported on Friday that online retail sales rose 25 percent year-on-year in December to £6.8 billion, taking the total for 2010 to £58.8 billion, up 18% on the previous year and and far outstripping the original forecast of 13%.

It is predicted that growth in 2011 will also increase by an average of 18%, with total online sales in the UK estimated at around £69 billion.

The study also highlighted a 40% year-on-year rise in December online sales of clothing, footwear and accessories and a 36 percent increase in alcohol sales.

A spokesperson for IMRG says ‘The December figures showed that despite the dire predictions during the run-up to the festive season, online retailers had a very successful Christmas, resulting in an above average year-on-year growth in nearly all sectors’.

‘This impressive growth can be attributed to two major factors, the impending increase in VAT and of course the coldest recorded December in the UK for 100 years’.
