Improving your site’s images for better SEO results

When it comes to SEO, most people focus heavily on the text on the page, but SEO doesn’t stop there – did you know that the images on the page can also play a part in improving your online visibility?

If done correctly, optimising the images on your website can lead to a positive effect on the rankings for your chosen keywords, but don’t forget, just like regular content optimisation, it’s important not to try and ‘play’ Google!

Google can spot a keyword stuffed block of text, and similarly, the search giant can also pick up on over optimised image text. The search engine can already pick out the main parts of the image such as the colours, shapes and any text displayed within an image, however there are some areas where you can offer more information about the image and increase your image SEO.

So, how do you get it right? We got our SEO team together to discuss the some quick tips and tricks for optimising your online images…

1. Create a unique filename – You should always give images a unique, descriptive name. Many people opt to stick to the default filename if using their own photography, however, this does nothing for your SEO. Be clear and direct when naming your files, this is not the time to be sales focused or overly quirky as this is simply helping ensure your images are found. If you are adding a pair of black Levi jeans to your site, you would simply stick with black-Levi-jeans or perhaps include the product code of the item.

2. Utilise your ALT tags – ALT tags are used to give search engines more information about an image through an HTML field. In the beginning, the ALT text was used primarily to improve accessibility, however, marketers soon discovered that they could be used to optimise the SEO of images. Unlike the filename, the ALT text provides more information about the image itself, therefore it is advised to expand on the file name and add some context to the image description.

3. Add a caption – Captions are great for offering even more information about an image. If search engines can’t find information about the image in the title or ALT text, they will then search the surrounding copy. Although captions are not classed as essential elements of image SEO, they are a great asset for usability, so long as they are relevant and compliment the image.

4. Keep an eye on your file size – When uploading an image, make sure that files are the appropriate size for what you are using them for. If the image will be 200×200 on the site make sure that’s the size of the actual file. If using Photoshop always take the quality settings as low as you can without impacting the clarity of the image. If adding photos to a blog, try and save down as much as possible, large image files can affect the load time of the page which then affects the overall user experience on your site.

5. Stay relevant! – It seems obvious, but relevancy is one of the key aspects of modern SEO, if the content of your page isn’t relevant – what value does it offer your visitor? This works the same for images. When choosing the right images for a page, make sure that they work to enhance the content of the page, not detract from it.
