UK proves to be top online spender

Through recent research, British consumers have been identified as Europe’s top online spenders, with almost one third of the continents sales over the last year coming from the UK.

Price comparison website Kelkoo carried out the research for the Centre of Retail Research, and it revealed that consumers in the UK spent an estimated £38 billion online in 2009, accounting for 30% of the total online sales in Europe. Despite the recession having an impact on high street stores, the research confirms that online sales proved resilient to this and continue to grow.

UK online spending grew by 12% in 2009, with purchases over the internet accounting for 9.5% of all retail sales. The report also predicted increased growth of 12.4% in 2010.

Kelkoo UK managing director Bruce Fair stated: “While the retail industry is showing slow signs of recovery, the online shopping sector bucked the trend in 2009 delivering double-digit growth, and is expected to continue to perform strongly in 2010.”

Sales online are predicted to rise at an even greater rate across Europe as a whole this year, with the market set to expand by 19.6% as shoppers abandon the high street and head online.
