Shakespeare’s home town tops the eCommerce charts
Research has shown that Shakespeare’s home town of Stratford-upon-Avon has taken the topshop in a list of places in the UK that are seen to be embracing the world of online shopping.
The town beat over 1,300 other towns to the top spot in the list, which revealed the UK’s ‘hot pockets of eCommerce’ with a group of businesses from those areas were surveyed to see how they were using the internet to drum up trade.
According to research commissioned by Google, the tourist town made it’s way to the topspot when it comes to using the internet to attract customers and orders. Stratford in Warwickshire has been named as the company’s eTown Award winner, following research into 1,300 towns and cities across the UK. The tough criteria used included whether companies had mobile phone-friendly websites, hosted a blog and the businesses presence on any internet-listings sites.
Google spokeswoman Laurian Clemence admitted the company was surprised by the results. “We had an unlikely champion in that Stratford-upon-Avon came first, showing it isn’t all just about men in tights,” she said.
‘The internet is going to contribute massively towards our future economic growth, and many businesses rely on the web to grow,” added Dan Cobley, managing director at Google U.K. “These eTown awards are designed to recognise and reward those areas leading the way forward in e-commerce, and Stratford should be extremely proud to be the UK’s top e-commerce town.”
Internet commerce is worth more than £100 billion to the UK economy, more than either the utilities or transport sectors.
