Penguin 3.0: Everything you need to know about Google’s latest update

Last Friday Google rolled out yet another Penguin update (it’s sixth one now) – one that the SEO world has been expecting for over a year – Penguin 3.0.

Unlike other major updates, Penguin 3.0 has been described as ”more of a refresh of the existing algorithm changes” rather than a full update, with the main aim being to ”drastically reduce the amount of spam on the internet – giving users a much better and more relevant search experience” according to Pierre Far, Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google UK.

Far also goes on to describe the update as a refresh which‘helps sites that have already cleaned up the webspam signals discovered in the previous Penguin iteration, and demotes sites with newly-discovered spam.”

The refresh is currently being rolled out worldwide affecting all Google users across the globe, however it is said to be primarily focusing on English queries.

We understand that as a retailer you’ll have numerous questions about the latest Google update and what it means for your business, so our Online Marketing team has put together some FAQ’s below on what you need to know about the Penguin 3.0 update…

So, what does this mean for my business?

The Penguin algorithm is used to filter out spam and promote positive SEO link building techniques. Sites using link networks or purchasing links as a way to improve their rankings have been demoted by Penguin since it’s first roll out in April 2012. Penguin analyses your site’s link profile and determines or not it adheres to Google’s guidelines. Site’s with unique, quality content and viable links will most likely escape the impact of Penguin 3.0.

How is Visualsoft helping to ensure my site is Penguin proof?

Help! I think my site has been hit! What should I do?

If you think your site has been affected by the Penguin 3.0 roll out, here are 3 practical tips to follow in order to protect your site.

  • Review your Backlinks – The Penguin algorithm focuses on relevant, reputable links. Review sites that are linking to your site and remove those with little value.
  • Remove Exact Match and Keyword Stuffed Anchor Text – Penguin will focus on over optimised anchor text and penalise for this.
  • Audit Your Content –  Check what you currently have on your site and remove anything that is out dated, irrelevant and spammy – including blog post comments!
