mCommerce usage to hit 25% by 2017

With mCommerce becoming more and more popular due to continuous improvements in smartphone technology, and overall ease of use, its no wonder that recent research published has estimated that in five years’ time, UK consumers could be using mCommerce for almost 25% of their overall shopping activities.

The report, by ABI Research, highlighted key statistics in the industry, including the £41.8 billion which has been spent through mobile devices in the past 12 months. Analysts expect that this will continue to grow at an exceptional rate between now and 2017.

In a similar report also published this month, KPMG has predicted that mobile commerce will grow by a massive 97% per year over the next three years, with revenue from mobile commerce expected to hit £591 billion by 2015. This is expected to be boosted by a number of key factors, such as NFC-enabled devices,  the launch of the new iPhone 5, and also the rumoured launch of 4G network by Orange & T-Mobile next year.

While the growth of smartphone popularity since the launch of the iPhone is arguable the main cause of the rise ownership is one of the main causes of the rise, part of the expansion is being put down to the increasing need for retailers to cater to various customer groups across multiple platforms. More and more retailers, including many Visualsoft clients, are choosing to expand into various routes to market including the use of mobile commerce.

ABI Research spokesperson, John Devlin, said that mCommerce was still not quite a mainstream tool for retail, but would eventually hit this level of usage, thanks to its continued growth at a time when other areas of the market are struggling to break even.

Mr Devlin also pointed out that consumer awareness of m-commerce is being spread, thanks to the knowledge that deals and offers can be attained through smartphone platforms and then used in the real world.
