Today is anticipated to be the busiest online shopping day of the year, gaining it the title of ‘Mega Monday’. According to a wide range of news sources – including the BBC, the Daily Telegraph, and the Daily Mail – online sales in Britain could lead to a frenzied spend of up to £22 million per hour as consumers stock up in time for Christmas.
In conjunction with the Centre for Retail Research, price comparison site Kelkoo has predicted that consumers will spend £537m online today, which is a 29% increase on last year, and credit card company Visa is expecting to handle 3.8 million transactions throughout the day.
Despite the huge spend figures expected, some online retailers believe that next Monday will actually surpass Mega Monday – online retailer body IMRG predicts that between midday and 1pm on December 6 will see the peak in internet shopping.
