Today is Manic Monday, the day that retailers are widely known to kick-start the tradition for early Christmas shopping and take advantage of the busiest day of the year for etailers online, with various offers and promotions.
Manic Monday is well known to be the busiest day of the year for shopping online, as it traditionally falls after the last pay day before Christmas but still allows time for delivery and wrapping before December 25, which falls on a Sunday in 2011.
Experts from shopping comparison website Kelkoo have predicted that a total of £537m will be spent today – the equivalent of £22.4m an hour. It has also been highlighted that transactions will peak at around 1pm, with many consumers taking the to the web on their lunch breaks to begin the yearly search for gifts, and then again at around 7pm as shoppers go online after returning home from work.
A study which Visualsoft reported on in August found that 74% of consumers planned to buy presents online this Christmas, with 30% looking to do more shopping on the internet than last year, and 61% reaching for their mobile devices to shop for gifts online.
Visa Europe commercial director Steve Perry said: “Shopping online is now a natural part of the gift-buying process for consumers and a key part of Christmas sales strategy for retailers. The combination of monthly salaries being paid and people taking delivery times into consideration should combine to deliver a record day for internet shopping.”
December 4th and 5th are also predicted to be hectic occasions for mass online shopping sessions, with a total of £824 million expected to change hands over this 48 hour period, as stores benefit from a second influx of orders.
Many of our clients are reporting record sales today so far, with the busiest period still to come later tonight, and many stating that November has been an exceptional month for sales online so far.
