Twitter celebrates hitting the 500 million users mark

Posted on 07/03/2012 by Sarah McCormick

New figures released this week show that Twitter has reached the 500million users mark since launching in 2006.

Twitter was launched in July 2006 by Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone, as a brainstorming log, and the site now attracts 12 new accounts every second, with over 140million posts tweeted everyday!

The micro blogging site has seen huge growth online in the past year alone, and celebrates the 500 million milestone just short of it’s sixth birthday.

The popularity of the site has shot up in recent years due to its increased usage with high profile celebrities, utilising the site as a key PR tool. If used correctly, Twitter can act as a key business tool which is effective in retaining customers and attracting new customers to your online store.

The site, which aims to update your followers in 140 characters or less, has many advantages over its rivals such as Facebook and Google Plus. Twitter is a public forum which has a much wider reach than Facebook, which allows you to interact beyond your network, allowing to not only to retain existing customers but also expand into new markets. Twitter is the perfect route to reaching a  mass audience, including your existing customers, potential audience and those outside of your immediate circles.

Twitter allows you and you business to ‘follow’ people of interest, which causes their updates to appear on your homepage dashboard, and you can also allow them to follow you. Features such as hashtagging allows you to search for and follow conversations with a specific topic,as well as gain insights, learn trends and assess your competitors accounts. Twitter can also act as a key communication tool (if used correctly!) which allows you to send messages to your followers, send direct messages and respond to posts which have been aimed at you.

The more people who follow you on Twitter, the more influence and networking opportunities you have! Visualsoft can add Twitter to your homepage, product page or any page of your eCommerce website to encourage your customers to interact with you online.
