Over 50s Age Group Enjoys Online Growth

One of the growing age groups on the Internet is the over 50s, causing a huge increase in demand for net services catering for older users.

The UK Online Measurement Company (UKOM) discovered in its latest study that Britain’s internet audience rose from 36.9 million last year to 38.8 million in May, with more than half of these new users being aged 50 or older. The new users also consisted of more men than women, with men over 50 accounting for 30% of the 1.9 million new users.

On behalf of UKOM, Alex Burmaster said: “The internet is getting older in more ways than one. Not only is the medium itself maturing, but the audience is shifting towards older age groups.”

31% of the UK’s total online audience is now aged over 50, with the largest user base aged between 35 and 49.

Burmaster added: “There is still a perception that the net is youth-centric but this is clearly not the reality.”
