Cross-selling is a very simple but highly effective sales technique – it provides users with additional images and information on related items. Cross-selling can also be used to up-sell, offering your customers the chance to purchase an additional product relating to the product on show.
An example of cross-selling would be showing different colours of a t-shirt on a t-shirt product page. The advantage of cross-selling online is that an alternative is available to a user shopping via brand, product category, or price. This technique ensures a smooth browsing/purchasing experience for the user, and a higher conversion rate.
Up-selling is slightly different; an example of this technique would be showing guitar strings and music books on a guitar product page.
Both of these techniques provide the opportunity to sell more products, and increase conversions.
